Beste Bart,

als inleiding op je 'religieuze biografie' (eigenlijk natuurlijk religieuze auto-biografie... zoals je daar ook schrijft) beschrijf je je 'overstap' van gelovige naar atheist met de woorden 'hoe ik van het christelijk geloof ben afgestapt'..

Dat is, zoals de Engelsen zouden zeggen, een derogatory term... vernederend.
Verander het bv. in het positieve 'over het geloof heengestapt', wat geloof neerzet als een obstakel.

'Van je geloof afvallen' stelt geloof voor als 'iets hoogs' zonderwelks je alleen 'berggafwaarts' kan gaan.

Beste Mattijs,

Volgens de Grote Van Dale betekent "afstappen" in dezen "ervan afgaan, afzien, ermee ophouden, uitscheiden". Dit is ook de manier waarop ik het gebruik: ik ben opgehouden gelovig te zijn. Ik beschouw het dus niet als een vernederende term.
